ENVIRONMENT ACTIVITIES

WESTVIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

(Mosquito Creek, Lower Mission Creek)
PLANTING
The school received an Evergreen Foundation grant in 1999 and started their program by installing planter boxes. They later naturalized more of the school grounds with native plants and added a shade garden and butterfly garden.
These projects were lost.
The old school building was demolished in 2007, after a new building was constructed on the east half of the property. The grounds were completely changed, and new landscaping was done.
Students have since been removing invasive plants and starting a garden using native plants.
RECYCLING
The school recycles everything, including difficult items such as juice containers.
ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS
Westview School has welcomed guest speakers from Grizz-Ed and Pole to Pole. More recently, the Water Conservation Group.
Students run the trail once a week in nearby Mosquito Creek Park as part of their fitness program, which combines activity with exposure to stream habitat.
STREAM STUDIES
The school participates in the "Salmonids in the Classroom" program, raising chum fry from eggs, then releasing them into Mosquito Creek.
KIDS IN GREEN
The environment club has been concentrating on Energy Conservation and finding ways to reduce use in the school, even though the new building is constructed to be energy efficient.
PAST PROJECTS
PLANTING

Students helped plant trees at the Mosquito Creek Trail Entry in April 2000, when it was reconfigured, and along the trail in June 2001.
