PLANTING
Highlands' students planted trees in the forest near the school in 2000, and added more flowering plants to the butterfly garden they started in 1997-98.
By 2010, a new school had been constructed, and the former grounds were completely changed.
A bio-swale was constructed beside the playing field to slow and retain water runoff.
New planter boxes were placed where they could be used by students for various projects.

In the fall and spring of the 2009/10 school year, students pulled ivy in nearby Fairmont Park, then replanted with ferns and other native plants supplied by the District of North Vancouver.

RECYCLING
Highlands encourages students to take recycleable items home for curbside recycling.
|
|
ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS
Beginning on Earth Day 2010, the school started a "Walk and Wheels" program, encouraging students to use alternate ways to commute (walk or bike) on Thursdays.
|
|
STREAM STUDIES
The school participates in the "Salmonids in the Classroom" program, raising chum fry from eggs, then releasing them into Mosquito Creek.

|
GREEN TEAM
Parents involved with the "Green Team" environmental club have brought in guest speakers, and various objects for "Show and Tell" such as a hydrogen fueled car.
