FISH ACCESS
UPPER MISSION CREEK
|
|
The upper reaches of Thain Creek and Mission Creek were not accessible to salmon for several decades, because culverts and catch basins, at many of the road crossings, blocked access.
|
|
Most of the culverts were replaced or modified from 1999 to 2011, and now the only barrier to salmon is the culvert at Evergreen.

| Cartelier Culvert Replacement Project ---- main stream
District of North Vancouver
2000
Voluntary
The District of North Vancouver replaced the old culvert at Cartelier.
A new fish-passable culvert links fish habitat on either side.
There is good salmonid habitat in this section of the creek. However, only trout are found.
| |
| |
Above Cartelier, at Madeley, the gradient becomes too steep for fish to travel further.

| Windsor Culvert Replacement Project ---- main stream
District of North Vancouver
2011
Voluntary
The District of North Vancouver replaced the old culvert at Windsor.
The old culvert blocked fish passage because the downstream end included a 2 metre (7 foot) high vertical drop over a concrete wall.
The concrete wall was removed, and the stream was realigned through a new culvert.
Salmon can now migrate much farther upstream.
